Cultural Tourism

Mwanza is the second largest city after Dar es salaam and located in the north western part of Tanzania. It lies at an altitude of 1,140 meters above sea level in the southern shores of Lake Victoria with a population of about 1,000,000 people. It is characterized by huge rocks and hills, which gives it its nickname rock city.

Besides this incredible environment, Mwanza is a place full of opportunities which are all backed with the cultural heritages ranging from both intangible and tangible cultures. Intangible cultures meanoral history of the surrounding communities before, during and after colonial times as well as contemporary ways of living. Tangible heritages include the built heritages such as historical buildings and places like the Gunzert House. This offers the possibility for cultural tourism for people who travel to enjoy lifestyle and culture of the surrounding communities which have in turn the chance to socialize while encouraging a feeling of identity and belongness of particular society. This is all the more important as socio-cultural sustainability premises the ability of the community to participate and engage and to see the benefits in doing so. Through cultural and historical tourism programs artists, curators, tourism and culture professionals, the private sector and local communities can be brought together, for an open dialogue, data exchange and solutions to problems that the tourism industry is facing.

The Gunzert House offers space for this, as a museum for history of the surrounding community, precolonial and postcolonial Tanzania. Furthermore, it as an information centre for tourists and researchers. You find also a public gallery of art work collections from Lake Zone and visiting artists and cultural performances.
